The digital ticket solved one problem and created a different set of them
Moving entry onto a phone made duplication far harder and made a crowd dependent on batteries, signal and software at precisely the moment when none of those can be relied upon.

What the change actually fixed
A printed document could be photographed, copied and sold repeatedly, and a gate had no reliable way to tell an original from a good reproduction. Digital entry replaces the document with a credential that is generated fresh and regularly regenerated, so a captured image expires almost immediately. That single change removes most casual duplication fraud, which was a substantial problem wherever informal resale was common.
It also gives the organiser a record of which credential entered when, which is useful for capacity management and for investigating misuse. For an operator, these are large gains and they explain why adoption has been rapid across almost every major venue.
What it made worse
Entry now depends on a device having power, having a working screen and being able to display the credential when it reaches the gate. Many implementations require connectivity to refresh the credential, and connectivity at a stadium approach is precisely where mobile networks are most loaded. A supporter who has done everything correctly can therefore be unable to enter for reasons entirely unrelated to their entitlement.
The failure also arrives at the worst possible moment, in a queue, under time pressure, with a crowd behind. Venues mitigate this by advising people to load credentials in advance and by maintaining staffed positions for resolving problems.
Transfer became a controlled operation
Passing a place to someone else now happens inside the operator's system rather than by handing over a piece of paper. That is what makes transfer restrictions enforceable, since the system decides whether a transfer is permitted and to whom. It is genuinely convenient when it works, because a transfer completes instantly and both parties have a record of it.
It is obstructive when the recipient does not have an account, does not have the application, or is not comfortable with the process. Groups attending together frequently discover this at the last moment, which is why organisers advise sorting transfers well in advance.
Throughput at the gate
A gate processes a crowd at a rate determined by how long each individual takes, and small differences per person become large differences across a full venue. Digital credentials can be read very quickly when everything works and very slowly when a supporter is still opening an application at the reader. Venues therefore invest heavily in signage, in staff positioned before the gates, and in encouraging people to have the credential ready in advance.
The processing rate is a safety consideration as much as a convenience one, since a crowd that cannot enter accumulates outside. Arrangements for entry timing and queue management are set by the venue for each event and are the instructions that apply on the day.
Why fallbacks still exist
Every venue retains a manual process for admitting people whose credential cannot be read, because the alternative is turning away legitimate holders. Those processes are deliberately slower and involve verification against the operator's records, which is why they are handled away from the main flow. Venues also plan for the failure of the system itself, since a network or platform outage would otherwise prevent an entire crowd from entering.
The existence of these fallbacks is the clearest acknowledgement that digital entry is more fragile than the paper it replaced. It is more secure and less robust simultaneously, which is an unusual combination and one worth understanding before relying on it.
