Why Coverage Windows End Before The Result Is Known
Scheduled broadcast slots are fixed while sport is not, and the mismatch is why coverage occasionally departs during a match still in progress.

Live coverage sometimes ends while a contest continues. The cause is a fixed transmission slot meeting an event of unpredictable length.
Where the fixed slot comes from
Channel schedules are built as a continuous sequence with each programme occupying a defined period. Everything after a live event depends on it finishing when planned.
Sport does not cooperate. Extra time, rain delays, injury stoppages and tie-breaks all extend an event beyond the slot allocated to it.
The scheduler therefore allocates a slot based on typical duration plus a margin, and events exceeding that margin create a conflict.
How the conflict is resolved
The usual resolution moves the remaining coverage to another channel in the same group, freeing the original slot for the scheduled programme.
Where no alternative channel is available, coverage ends and the audience is directed to a streaming service or to a later highlights programme.
Which of these happens depends on the rights agreement, and major events almost always secure a guaranteed continuation route. Lesser fixtures are sold without that protection because the slot is cheaper.
Why some slots cannot overrun at all
Certain programmes are effectively immovable, particularly news bulletins with regional variations and contractual obligations attached.
Coverage running into one of those is cut regardless of the state of the contest, which is why departures cluster around fixed points in the evening.
Schedulers place live sport to avoid those collisions, but a long event drifts into them anyway. The margin built into the slot is the only defence, and it is finite.
Why streaming behaves differently
A streaming service has no schedule in the broadcast sense, since each viewer receives an individual stream and nothing follows it.
Coverage can therefore run until the event ends, which is why continuation routes point to streaming rather than to another channel.
The trade-off is that the viewer must switch device or application mid-event, and a share of the audience does not follow. Sign-in friction at exactly the wrong moment is the usual reason.
What viewers can do about it
Checking whether a rights holder offers a stream of the same feed before settling in gives an escape route if the broadcast departs.
Recordings should extend well past the scheduled end, since the overrun is the part most likely to matter and the part most likely to be lost.
Where a broadcaster is known to cut at a fixed point, watching the dedicated sports channel version rather than the mainstream one avoids the problem from the start.
