Why leaving a stadium takes longer than arriving, and how design tries to fix it
A crowd assembles over hours and disperses in minutes, which makes egress the hardest movement problem a venue faces and the one that most shapes how a building is laid out.

Arrival and departure are not symmetrical
People arrive at a venue across a long window, drawn by their own preferences about how early to get there and by transport that delivers them gradually. They leave within a few minutes of the same moment, because the event ends for everyone simultaneously and there is no reason to stay. The peak departure rate is therefore many times the peak arrival rate, even though exactly the same number of people is involved.
Every element of the exit path has to be sized for that peak, which is why concourses and stairs look excessive when a venue is empty. This asymmetry is the single most important fact in the movement design of any large venue.
Exit capacity is designed against the worst case
Venues are required to demonstrate that they can clear the seating areas within a defined time under emergency conditions, which sets a minimum on exit provision. That requirement sizes the stairs, the vomitories and the gates, and it is verified as part of the venue's safety certification. Ordinary egress at the end of an event uses the same infrastructure at a lower urgency, which is why it feels slow but never seizes up.
Anything that reduces the capacity of an exit route, including a blocked corridor or a closed gate, therefore matters more than it appears to. Emergency arrangements, evacuation procedures and any instruction given on the day come from the venue and the local authority, and they take precedence over everything else.
Why the bottleneck is usually outside
A venue can clear its own structure comparatively quickly, delivering a very large number of people onto the streets around it within minutes. Those streets, and the transport connecting them to the rest of the city, were not built for that instantaneous load and cannot absorb it. The queue therefore forms outside rather than inside, at stations, at bus stops and at the approaches to car parks.
Operators respond by staging the release of the crowd, holding people in areas where waiting is safe and comfortable rather than allowing everyone to converge at once. This is why some venues appear to be deliberately slowing people down, and it is usually the correct decision.
What venues do to spread the departure
Giving people reasons to stay for a while after the event flattens the peak, which is the underlying logic behind post-event facilities and screens. Distributing the crowd across several exits rather than concentrating it at one improves the rate substantially, provided people actually use their nearest. Signage and staffing are what determine whether that happens, since crowds default to the route they arrived by unless directed otherwise.
Some venues assign exit routes by section, which is more efficient and requires the crowd to accept being directed. Where transport capacity is fixed, spreading departure is the only lever available, and venues use it as far as the crowd will tolerate.
What this means for a spectator
Leaving early avoids the peak entirely and costs whatever remains of the event, which is a trade some people are willing to make and others are not. Waiting deliberately for twenty minutes frequently produces a faster journey than joining the immediate rush, because the constraint outside clears in that time. Knowing which exit and which transport option is least loaded is local knowledge that regular attendees accumulate and visitors do not have.
Published venue and transport guidance for the specific event is the substitute, and it is usually more detailed than people expect. The return journey is the part of a matchday most often planned badly, and it is the part where planning helps most.
